Wedding Reception Photographer, Lexington NC

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Last year the kids got a good laugh watching me learn how "Dougie".  I "Dougied" while cooking in the kitchen, I " Dougied" while folding clothes, and when when I vacuumed everyday for a week. It figures just as I got the dance down pat a new line dance has hit the scene.

I've seen this at every wedding so far this year, and since I'm not a frequent face at night clubs, I was curious to learn the steps. There are dozens of hip hop videos, but this one was nice and slow. If you are a bride to be, or a guest of an upcoming wedding break out your dancing shoes and learn this dance.

What is your favorite dance at a reception?

Note to wedding guests.... don't wear belly shirts to the wedding :)

Wedding in Mt. Ulla, North Carolina... NC wedding photographer

Sunday, February 26, 2012

Yesterday afternoon I drove to a tiny little town called Mount Ulla. The drive there was beautiful and I saw dozens and dozens of pastures that I wanted to jump out and photograph. I have never heard of Mt Ulla, but I found out that Mount Ulla Township is one of fourteen townships in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 1,397 according to the 2000 census and is currently the smallest township in Rowan County by population.

The town might have been small, but this wedding was full of big personality. Christy and Justin's wedding was gorgeous. A pinterest fan in the bride meant there were sure to be plenty of handmade ideas at the venue. Here is one of Christy from her bridal session with one of her handmade goodies ready to adorn the isle.

More to come from this wedding later, but right now I'm heading out of my shop to celebrate my little man turning 11....... ELEVEN.....sign... time flies.

Mardi Gras photoshoot, Real Life Photography

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

This morning Ashton and I headed outside for a tiny Mardi Gras inspired photoshoot. I think New Orleans would be a beautiful city to visit, I'm not sure that I would want to fight the crowds during Mardi Gras... but it is definitely on my bucket list of places to see.

A Christian holiday and popular cultural phenomenon, Mardi Gras dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites. Also known as Carnival, it is celebrated in many countries around the world–mainly those with large Roman Catholic populations–on the day before the religious season of Lent begins. Brazil, Venice and New Orleans play host to some of the holiday's most famous public festivities, drawing thousands of tourists and revelers every year.

If you click on the link below you can see an actual live view of  New Orleans.

Lydia's Boutique Lexington NC

Monday, February 13, 2012

Lexington NC, has in the past been well-know for its innovative furniture production, and of course BBQ. But in the recent years furniture has faded away and citizens have been left to re-invent our plans for the future. My studio is located on Main Street, and I have loved watching Lexington making positive changes over the past 5 years. New shops in the Uptown district are drawing crowds daily. Restaurants are serving delicious food and inviting atmospheres to guest and locals.

Last week I walked down the street to photograph another new store that has opened in our sweet little town. Their ribbon cutting ceremony gave us all a good chance to step inside and have a look around.

Several elected officials came to the event including out newest Mayor, Newell Clark.

Lexington is really beginning to take shape again. Recovery from the collapse of the furniture market has been tough, but there are big things in the works for the uptown district. Many new shops have opened in the past few years. Just next to Lydia's boutique is a fantastic garden shop with many unique finds. CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE BACKYARD RETREAT

Our economy is driven by small businesses. Main Street has been lucky to greet coffee shops, boutiques, antique stores, artist, and various other shopping experiences. Next time you are in the market for a special find, find a spot to park and stroll down your local Main Street. Enjoy a slower pace, walk from shop to shop, see the difference in quality and customer service when you shop local. The big box stores can't compete with an afternoon of one-on-one interactions.

Lydia's will offer a variety of children's items, from clothes to lunchboxes check in often to what they have to offer.

Be sure to visit this great new store, and tell her that Melissa Sheets sent you in.
104 South Main Street, Lexington NC

Open      Monday-Friday 10:00 - 6:00

DIY Photobooth for Weddings

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Photo booths are all the rage right now. And I LOVE the idea. It is a great way to get really fun shots of everyone involved in your wedding.

You could rent a photo booth that spits out a strip of images, or you can get crafty and do your own photo booth. I even think DIY booths look..... dare I say.... better, than the roll-in ..all-in-one booths.

So here are some tips to make your photo booth a huge success.

How cute and simple would this be?

Step One: Decide where your booth will be set up. Pick an out of the way space at your reception. A corner away from dancing and food works the best.

Step Two: Decide who will be in charge of your booth. Your photographer may have an assistant that can man the booth for you. If not grab a friend or family member and put them in charge of it. Having a preteen, or teen is not a good idea. You want these to be awesome portraits, so pick someone who at least is interested in photography.

Props are a must.

Step Three: BUY props. There are tons of online prop shops and free printables to download. Just print cut and hot-glue onto sticks. Think feather boas, sombrero hats, funky signs, sunglasses.

Step Four: Plan your backdrop and secure a camera. If your photographer is helping he/she might have studio lights for her assistant to use. (Usually there is a small fee from the photographer). Below are a couple examples of how to create your backdrop.

PVC backdrop stands an be made by following this diagram. Fabric can then be secured in place by clamps. You can even sew pockets to slip over the pipe. Be sure to use sandbags to hold this in place if you are taking it outside.

Step Five:  Put out signs directing people to use the props and booth. Encourage your wedding party to partake early so guest are encouraged to step up.

Have fun with this idea, can't wait to see it in action this wedding season.

Happy Thursday!

So excited to see this new line of Nikon cameras coming out. They are available for pre-order now, but aren't set for release until March.

The new Nikon D800 promises unsurpassed resolution with its 36.3 megapixel sensor. Nikon announces its new full frame camera to fulfill the needs of professional landscape photographers as well as the new wave of DSLR-based film makers. The D800 also features built-in flash, and is compatible with the acclaimed Creative Lighting System Nikon, including the Command Mode for embedded control Speedlights wirelessly.
Here is the D4 body compared to the D800.

I'm so excited about this release..... Now I have to decide, hardwoodfloor in my studio, or a new camera? The jury is still debating :)

Happy Wednesday!

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

This is such an amazing organization.
I just wanted to take a moment to share their mission statement
and recent miracle.
If you are a photographer please take a moment to read this
and consider becoming apart of this organization.

Recent Miracle

A photographer was ready to ease another family's pain of having a stillborn baby, but Christmas morning ended up being a surprise for everyone, including doctors.

In the video below, Bob Buckley shares the story of Tom, Jill and Noelle Aguiar.

Noelle turned eight weeks old Thursday and weighs 1 pound, 11 ounces. She's also starting to feed from a bottle and is breathing on her own with some oxygen support.

The photographers from Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep come at the families' request and do their work free of charge
